Earlier this week, a news report grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go. Events could have played out tragically, but the check cashing booth’s bullet-proof glass and locked door endured the onslaught of automatic weapons fire. Not one of the trembling employees squeezed inside sustained a hit. Impressed, I wondered just how to build a lasting and secure hiding place.
While the thieves fled with only the wallet of a terrified customer, there’s little doubt that the traumatized employees returned home giving thanks for being spared a premature step into eternity. My thoughts drew me to a greater need: how to build a lasting and secure hiding place that kept me from harm in times of trouble—forever.
David gives authentic instruction, written in his thirty-second song recorded in the Book of Psalms. Here are the steps:
One: Recognize Truth
Whatever the trouble, God is set to rescue those who stand firm in His Biblical mandates.
Eternal Truths:
- God’s forgiveness is real. “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” (v1)
- Motivation matters. “Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.” (v2)
- Unconfessed sin has consequences. “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.” (vv3-4)
Two: Take Action
Once David identified the root of his miseries, he took action.
“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.’” (v5)
David records God’s immediate response at the end of verse 5. “And you forgave the guilt of my sin.”
Three: Give Testimony
David’s song advises others enduring trouble because of unconfessed sin.
“Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.” (v6)
Four: Identify the Forever Hiding Place
After God forgives him, David recognizes that being in right relationship with God is the only place he can enjoy a lasting and secure hiding place.
“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” (v7)
Picture the background orchestra beginning the crescendo here, as God responds to David:
- God’s Promise. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (v8)
- God’s Admonition. “Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.” (v9)
Five: Accept Truth
David realizes that everyone has troubles. He also understands that trusting God—not hiding his sin but staying right with God–is his only lasting and secure hiding place.
“Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.” (v10)
David’s agony is over. It’s the time to rejoice in the hope God’s forgiveness has given him.
“Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!” (v11)
Conclusion
Daily reminders of the troubling times in which we live strike chords of fear in our hearts. The sense of helplessness can be paralyzing.
The solution to our troubles and fears is found in only one hiding place. The lyrics to David’s song emerged out of the desperation of his life. They are as true for us today, as they proved for David so many centuries earlier. The one true God is our only hiding place.
